What you'll learn

Spark, flame, then a fire that lasts

Sparks flying from a ferro rod onto tinder

The spark

Make the ferro rod work for you

A ferro rod throws a shower of hot sparks, wet or dry, long after a lighter would give up. Kyle shows you the grip and stroke that actually catch, then you practise until it feels natural.

The tinder

Find fuel in the forest

Copeland Forest is full of things that burn, if you know where to look. You'll head into the trees to find natural tinders, then test them side by side to see which catch first. Everyone gets their own tinder kit too.

The fire

Build a fire that keeps going

Fire lays and shapes, blowing an ember to flame, splitting wood by batoning and carving feather sticks. By the end of the day you'll know how to keep a fire alive, not just start one.

How it works

Bring warm layers. We'll bring the fire kit.

Warm layers you don't mind getting smoky, waterproof boots, gloves, a packed lunch, snacks and water. A hot drink in a flask is a good idea in late November. Bring a knife if you have one.
