About Wilderness Union
Wilderness Union is Toronto’s largest outdoor adventure community. Our mission is to help people connect with the outdoors and find their community. We run unique, accessible trips across Ontario every week. You bring yourself, we handle the rest.
Our members are at the heart of what we do. We are not a traditional outdoor club, and our membership reflects that. We are a diverse group of young adults with a wide range of outdoor experience.
Our adventures are incredibly varied and include hiking, camping, paddling, skiing and more. As a guide, you won’t need expertise in all of these activities, we rely on outside instruction for some, but you should be excited to accompany a group on all of them.
The Role
We’re looking for knowledgeable, flexible, solutions-oriented and passionate freelance Wilderness Guides who want to create awe-inspiring experiences that connect our community to the great outdoors and each other.
We pride ourselves on offering the best trips Ontario has to offer and rely on exceptional guides to provide extraordinary experiences to each of our members. In return, we provide industry leading compensation, a huge variety of trips to lead, learning and development opportunities as well as a tight-knit community environment.
Most of our events happen over the weekends - beginning in Toronto and spanning across Ontario. We’re hiring for personality fit first. You should be outgoing, have a real love for the outdoors and get excited at the prospect of sharing that love with a great group of people.
Position Responsibilities:
- Guiding single and/or multi-day group trips
- Managing equipment setup, takedown, cleaning, packing and maintenance
- Ensuring the safety of every member
- Ensuring everyone has an enjoyable experience
- Teaching attendees wilderness skills Preparing group meals on camping trips
- Driving members to and from adventure locations in our van (preferred)
Job Requirements:
- At least 1 year of previous experience guiding or leading groups in backcountry settings
- A valid WFA/WAFA/WFR certification (WFR strongly preferred)
- Ability to hike 30km in a day
- Paddling experience
- Familiarity with risk management strategies and emergency protocols for backcountry trips in various weather conditions
- Eligibility to work in Canada
- Located within the GTA
While not required, the following qualifications are considered assets:
- A clean, class F drivers license (preferred)
- Paddling certifications
- Lifeguard certifications
- Hike leader and any other outdoor activity certifications
- Additional languages
