Got something you're preparing for, thinking about the Epics or just want to challenge yourself?
We're teaming up with Altitude Athletic Training, home to the world's largest simulated-altitude training space in downtown Toronto. By recreating the oxygen conditions of 10,000 feet, they help outdoor enthusiasts build the strength, stamina and endurance to take on everything from weekend hikes to bucket-list mountain adventures. This day puts that training to work on real terrain: hours on your feet with a loaded pack, steep descents, uneven ground, and uncertain conditions.
We'll head to Clappison Woods in Waterdown, on the Niagara Escarpment, and tackle a 12.7 km loop with 427 m of climbing - among the greatest elevation gains of any day-trip we've run. The route follows the Bruce Trail past Sleepy Hollow Falls and along Grindstone Creek, with steady climbs and steep descents for around 6 hours. It's a full day and a proper test of your legs, your boots and your pack.
This is an Explorer-exclusive training session, so bring your own pack loaded up as you would for a big day in the backcountry. You'll be hiking alongside Altitude's members, so expect good company and plenty of people who like a challenge.
Afterwards, we'll go straight into a social at Altitude with food and drink provided from 5 pm.
Check the trip plan for the details, including the meeting point, gear list, and timing for the day.

Niagara Escarpment: 427 m of climbing on the Bruce Trail, with the short, sharp ups and downs the escarpment is known for.
Sleepy Hollow Falls: The loop passes the falls and follows Grindstone Creek through the ravines of Clappison Woods.
