Description

This is one of the coolest hikes we do all year. If you see yourself in the photo above, you know what it is and will remember this iconic trip.

Approximately 2 hours from Toronto in a little known area deep in the Canadian shield, you'll get to see what the wilderness is all about. It's an incredibly diverse hike that takes us through pristine forest, along stunning rivers and lakes, until we climb a (modest) mountain. Last time we were there, we saw plenty of beavers, and this is one of the better locations we visit for wildlife spotting. Bears are active in the area, although will likely be hibernating for the winter.

In summer, this hike is nothing extraordinary. In winter it turns into an epic adventure- an 18km out and back with a decent amount of elevation and difficult navigation. Snowy conditions make it all the more challenging. With a good level of fitness and a desire to push yourself, it's completely possible. If you have any questions about suitability, drop us a message on Discord, and we'll be glad to help you decide!

In summer, this hike is nothing extraordinary. In winter it turns into an epic adventure that's closer in difficulty to a mega hike - an 18km out and back with a decent amount of elevation and difficult navigation. Snowy conditions make it all the more challenging. With a good level of fitness and a desire to push yourself, it's completely possible. 07:00 - Leave Toronto from near Keele Subway Station

09:00 - Meet at trailhead and begin hike

12:30 - Lunch at the summit

18:00 - Anticipated return to car

20:00 - Approximate return to Keele Subway Station

Can I bring my dog with me?

Yes, dogs are welcome as long as they travel in a private vehicle and remain leashed. Keep in mind this is a challenging hike, likely in significant snow so you'll want to ensure your dog is capable. We won't be able to take responsibility for any pets.

How difficult is this really?

It's a hard hike - if you can run 5-10km, you should be fine hiking this. We love to help you push yourself and if you reach out in advance we'll discuss your suitability to take this on.

Keep in mind that 18km in wintery conditions is equivalent to about a 30km hike in regular conditions, so if there's been fresh snow expect it to be considerably more difficult!

Can I use credits on this hike?

Yes you may!

What to Expect on a WU Trip

Is a Wilderness Union Trip Right for You?
We offer a unique alternative to commercial tours. We don't just show you incredible natural wonders, we teach you to become confident in nature so you can discover the life changing magic of the outdoors. You'll love it here if:
- You want to make real friends, not just small talk with strangers
- You prefer "off the beaten path" over "all-inclusive resort"
- You're happy to pitch in and learn new skills (e.g., helping with camp setup or group tasks)
- You value the journey and the company as much as the destination
