The salmon run has got to be the craziest natural spectacle you'll see in Toronto. Each year adult salmon make an arduous journey from Lake Ontario back to the river of their birth. Swimming against the current, they navigate through various obstacles to reach their spawning grounds. Upon arrival, female salmon dig nests in the riverbed to lay their eggs, which are then fertilized by males. After spawning, many salmon die, enriching the river ecosystem. Their eggs hatch in the gravel, and the young fish eventually make their way downstream to Lake Ontario, growing into adults who will one day return to the Humber River to continue the cycle.
At the lower humber river, you'll get to see the salmon swimming upstream and repeatedly throwing themselves against the river's weirs as they try to get further up (and avoid being caught by fishermen and women).
We'll hike from High Park via the waterfront up to Old Mill where we'll watch the fishies and eat lunch together. The hike will be about 8km total, very leisurely and suitable for all members.
