We're heading to the islands for the perfect Toronto summer day
We'll all head over to the island together on the ferry and spend some time on the water. Your ferry ticket is included in the cost of this adventure. We'll have a selection of tandem kayaks and Stand up Paddleboards (SUPs) with which to explore the island over a 2 hour adventure. When we're done, we'll head to a secret spot with some of the best views of the city for a picnic and if you want to, a swim, overlooking the city.
Please note that while we'll all have Personal Flotation Devices (PFDs) you'll need to be able to swim to join this adventure, the rental company ask that you sign a waiver agreeing to this.
10:15 - Meet at Jack Layton Ferry Terminal. You'll need to arrive early so we can give you your ferry tickets and ensure we can all make the ferry on time. Anyone arriving late will be left behind and have to make their own way across on a private water taxi.
10:30 - Ferry leaves to Ward's Island.
11:00 - 13:00 - Kayak/SUP adventure
13:00 - Picnic
Ferries return every 30 minutes to the mainland.
This custom map is georeferenced, meaning it will show you where you are on the map in the right software and lays out the rough path that we’ll be following. It’s opened with the Avenza app which must be downloaded and installed in advance of the adventure.
You should also download the What3words app - this makes it easy to share and find locations in the unlikely event that you get lost.
They'll have storage lockers and dry bags for rent there (cost uncertain) but you'll probably want to avoid bringing too much stuff so you don't need to leave it unsecured while we're paddling. If you have a dry bag, bring it.
We'll be doing a picnic so bring whatever you'd like to eat and drink!

Water based danger: You'll need to be able to swim to join this adventure and everyone must wear their PFD at all times. Review the map shared above - we'll stick together and avoid going out onto open water where the water is a lot more choppy and there's greater danger.
The Toronto Islands have a rich indigenous history and were originally inhabited by the Mississaugas, a Indigenous Nation of the Anishinaabe people. The Islands were used for hunting, fishing, and as a place of spiritual significance. European settlement in the Toronto area had a significant impact on the Indigenous populations and their use of the Islands. Despite this, the Indigenous presence on the Islands has continued in various forms, including the establishment of the First Nations-run Hanlan's Point Beach and Cultural Centre.
