Trip Overview

We've got a bit of everything this Sunday... nature, food, education and shopping. We're starting the day with a hike at one of our closest secret spots to Toronto - Nashville Conservation Reserve. For some reason, Nashville has never gone mainstream and we love it that way. It's a beautiful area with very few other people around. We've got just a couple of hours so we'll do about a 4km loop that takes us along the Humber river and into the woods.

Once we're done, we're heading to the outdoor superstore, Decathlon Vaughan where we'll have lunch provided. After lunch, we've got a short Winter Clothing Clinic where we'll be talking about dressing right for all kinds of winter conditions then head off to shop in store. Wilderness Union members get an exclusive 15% discount and they've already got a bunch of stuff on sale so there's plenty of things that will be over 50% off. We got a little carried away last time.

There's also going to be some giveaways from Decathlon of a $100 value which will be a surprise even to me.

Adventure Details

Hike Length: 4km

Terrain: A mixture of grass and woodland. While there's not much total ascent, there are a couple of tougher climbs that we'll take slowly. Due to the warm weather there won't be any snow on the ground so hiking boots are fine without ice spikes.

Estimated time to complete: 2 hours with breaks and exploration time.

Itinerary

08:50: Those taking the van meet at the Petrocanada next to Keele Subway Station. Driving to the shuttle location? There's free parking here.

09:00: Shuttle leaves. Please note that out of respect for each other, we leave dead on time and can not wait for latecomers.

09:35: Meet self-drivers at trail head. This map will take you to the precise spot. Note that there's only limited parking (free) and if there are no spots, you may need to go back down the road to find a spot. Self-drivers, please be on time as we can't wait for you.

09:45 - 12:00: Hike

12:00 - 12:30: Drive to Decathlon in Vaughan. Meet those joining for just the Decathlon event at the Yoga Studio.

12:30 - 13:00: Lunch, TBD. Make sure your dietary requirements are updated in your account!

13:00 - 14:00: Winter Clothing Workshop

14:00 - 15:00: Shopping

16:00: Anticipated return to Keele subway station

Indigenous History of the Area

We like to share some of the indigenous background of the areas we visit because these territories have rich histories that are easy to overlook. Indigenous communities have a connection to and respect for the land that has largely been lost since European settlement. As we strive to form a deeper connection with the land, we have much to learn from these communities. I use the Native Land map to learn more about these areas and find that developing a richer understanding leads to a greater enjoyment of the adventures.

Nashville Conservation Reserve falls within the traditional area of the Petun people, also known as the Tobacco people and are one of the people among the Iroquois common in Ontario. There were probably only 8000 members prior to the arrival of European settlers. When those settlers arrived, that population was decimated by the disease that they brought.

Other, larger nations who still have connections to the area are the Missisaugas of the Credit First Nation the Anishnabe, Haudenosaunee, and the Huron Wendat.
