Crawford Lake is a pretty special day out. The eponymous lake is a rare, emerald green meromictic lake meaning that it's unusually still and holds an untouched geological record of the earth's development. So much so, that it was recently recognised as a marker of the Anthropocene period that we're now believed to be in. That's interesting enough but even better is the beautiful hike around it, along a board walk and past wood carvings that will ultimately take us up to a pretty spectacular viewpoint at Rattlesnake point.
The area has a rich indigenous history which the conservation authority has done a good job of displaying with a reconstruction Iroquioian village with incredble replicas of the Long Houses that the original inhabitants would spend time in.
We'll be tackling an easy hike of 11km.
