Trip Overview

This free online workshop is a follow up to our map and compass navigation session. You'll learn how to apply traditional navigation skills to modern tools. We'll cover:

  • How to find and create routes
  • Using GPX files
  • How to work with online mapping tools
  • Preparing your own printed maps
  • Navigating in the field using Avenza Maps (led by the training team at Avenza!)

  2. Finding Existing Routes – 25 minutes
  3. GPX 101 – 5 minutes
  4. CalTopo Deep-Dive – 25 minutes
  5. Printing & Offline Prep – 10 minutes
  6. Mobile Field Use with Avenza (led by Avenza) – 30 minutes
  7. Wrap-Up & Q + A – 15 minutes

This custom map is georeferenced, meaning it will show you where you are on the map in the right software and lays out the rough path that we’ll be following. It’s opened with the Avenza app which must be downloaded and installed in advance of the adventure.

You should also download the What3words app - this makes it easy to share and find locations in the unlikely event that you get lost.
